Mobility Scooter: Frequently Asked Questions
-
It depends on the outdoor setting. For driving on Devon roads, Cornish country lanes or mixed terrain paths such as the Camel Trail and for longer-distance use, an 8mph road mobility scooter offers better suspension, comfort and range than pavement scooters.
For use in urban settings such as local town centre shopping where you want to drive on both pavements and pedestrian precincts a pavement scooter capped at 4mph is the best option.

There isn't a single mobility scooter that's right for everyone. The best choice depends on where you'll use it, how often you'll travel, whether you need to lift it into a car and the level of comfort and support you require.
At Unique Mobility, we take the time to understand your lifestyle, mobility and future needs before recommending a scooter. Whether you're looking for a lightweight folding scooter for days out or a larger road scooter for greater comfort and range, our experienced Product Specialists can help you compare the options in our Exeter, Plymouth and Launceston showrooms or during a home demonstration across the Southwest subject to location.
-
No. You don't need a driving licence to use a mobility scooter and insurance isn't a legal requirement. However, we strongly recommend specialist mobility scooter insurance for added peace of mind, as it can provide cover for accidental damage, theft and public liability.
If you choose a Class 3 road scooter, it must be registered with the DVLA before it can be used on the road. Our team will explain everything you need to know and can help you choose a scooter that's suitable for where you plan to travel.

To keep your mobility scooter safe, reliable and performing at its best, we recommend having it professionally serviced every 12 months. Regular servicing helps identify worn parts before they become a problem, maintains battery performance and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
Our experienced engineers carry out servicing and repairs from our dedicated workshops, with support available throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Annual servicing is also required to maintain the additional cover provided by our 3-Year Scooter Warranty available on selected models.

The lifespan of a mobility scooter battery depends on the type of battery, how often it's used and how well it's maintained. Always follow the charging protocol advised for your product.
Lead-acid batteries, found on many larger mobility scooters, typically last around 12 months to 3 years. To maximise their lifespan, they should be charged after each use and never left in a discharged state for long periods.
Lithium batteries, commonly used on lightweight and folding travel scooters, generally last much longer - often 5 years or more - and can withstand significantly more charge cycles. They also tend to be lighter, charge more quickly and require less maintenance than lead-acid batteries.
If you notice your scooter isn't travelling as far as it used to, takes longer to charge or isn't holding its charge, it may be time to have the batteries checked. Our experienced engineers can test your batteries, advise if they need replacing and supply suitable replacement batteries for many popular mobility scooter models.
